The unit is fitted with polycarbonate plastic plating (covering/shielding). Polycarbonate plastic has many desirable characteristics for this application. The 1.25” thick plating is constructed of laminated sheets and is capable of stopping a bullet from a hand gun up to a 357 magnum caliber. This material is impact resistance and will actually become harder in the strike area when struck by a hard object. This material has a tensile strength of 9,000 psi with a Specific Gravity of 1.2. The plates for the canopy and leg cover are fabricate as separate plates and then welded together to make one solid piece. The 1.25” plating weighs 8.1 lbs/ft 2 . The head cover plates total weight for a queen sized mattress is approximately 360lbs and the leg cover total weight is approximately 600lbs. Total weight of all the polycarbonate plastic plating to be used for a queen sized mattress is approximately 1658lbs.

The matting surfaces of the covers and doors are grooved with rubber seals inserted into the grooves. The seals are ribbed EPDM material and can hold from 5 to 9 psi depending on the percent of compression. These units are designed to 20% compression and rated for greater than 7 psi (15’ of water static head pressure).

The plating will be colored to order specifications and will not be "see through" (although that is an option). The out side surfaces can be plated with stained pine wood paneling to give it a nice wood grain finish. The head cover side and front plates will be clear but w/ reflective characteristics that will allow the unit occupants to see out but prevent those on the outside from seeing in. The polycarbonate plating together provides the main attributes of a safe bed, safe room & bomb shelter.

The head cover, leg cover and doors will be operated by electronic actuators fitted with expansion boots as a safety feature to prevent accidental contact during operations and for esthetic purposes. The covers and doors are hinged on the out side. The actuators act as the locking mechanisms for the covers and doors when in the fully closed position for sealing and to prevent forced entry. Both of the door actuator links are fitted with quick release buttons in the rare case of failure of main (house) and backup (battery) power sources. The quick release buttons are accessed through cover doors in the headboard facing and has a flip guard to prevent accidental release during an emergency condition..

COVER/FRAME FITUP

The frame and headboard plating has sealant applied to contact faces and then bolted from the inside to the aluminum angle that forms the bed frame and headboard structure. Additional stainless steel bridge structuring that incorporates angled designs is an optional feature than can be added to the head and leg covers. This additional bracing will reinforce the polycarbonate plastic plating for protection from earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes and the torrents of flood waters.
